Course Description: To write creative fiction, we need only characters, a
place to start, and a direction to move in. This creative writing course
will provide opportunities for brainstorming these areas, as well as
habituating the writer within to everyday practice. If you're rusty, or
new to writing, you'll enjoy the refresher lessons on characters, point of
view, and conflict. We will focus on short stories, or a chapter at a time
of longer pieces in order to receive more in-depth critiques and intensive
constructive criticism. This is your place; a community that will accept
you, read your work, and offer honest feedback and suggestions for
improvement. There are three student forums with specific purposes geared
toward bettering you as a writer. Let your creativity shine through as we
discuss brainstorming, story starters, exercises, and the general business
of creative fiction, and creative non-fiction (a fast rising genre that we
all can contribute to). Click Here to Enroll Now!

how to approach unpleasant characters, sex, religion and conflict in
fiction. As the student accomplishes each lesson, they will begin
combining these elements into a short story. This course will review basic
skills, but move into more advanced story building, using ideas from an
initial brainstorming session to ultimately complete the course with a
short story that should be ready for marketing. The instructor will work
hand in hand with the students as well as assign groups for the students
to work within. This course is designed for a writer who has completed

Course Description: Plot designs are not something 'set-in-stone' by
magazine editors (or teachers of Creative Writing courses). Just as an
architect uses blueprints, so do writers of short stories for children. No
one buys a house if the architect does not know how to design blueprints.
Short story plots are the the children's fiction writer's blueprints. Four
basic 'blueprints' will be covered in this class: the Incidental plot, the
'did-it -by-myself, the wishful thought fulfilled, and the turn-around
story. From these, students will write from four to five stories. Each
story will be individually critiqued by the instructor. Rewriting
assistance and feedback will be given. The end focus will be marketing the
finished manuscripts for paid publication. This course is designed for
authors with some experience at writing, particularly in the area or short
stories for children. It will concern plotting, writing, rewriting and
actively marketing four different types of children's stories. If you
haven't completed 'Writing Short Short Stories for Children,' please email
the instructor at mshauers@kscable.com for information on qualifications
for this class. Click Here to Enroll Now!

Course Description: Do you think it would be fun to write a novel? Have
you been working on one for years and can’t seem to finish it, or do you
start lots of manuscripts only to file them as another great idea comes to
mind? Have you written, or edited and feel you want to tackle a novel?
Then this course is for you. Most ‘Novel Writing’ courses are designed to
write a ‘marketable’ novel. This course is created to help the beginner
get from page one to the end. If you follow the guidelines, you can finish
in a year, even with kids and a full time job. If writing courses
intimidate you, or they are written ‘over your head’. If you are nervous
enrolling in a class with published authors, then this is the place to
start. Don't feel shy, everyone here is a beginner. Explore this craft,
improve your creative writing skills, and finish your first novel. The
goal is to have fun, and the writing expectations are geared to new
authors. When complete you will have enough confidence to tackle any
creative writing course, or novel writing workshop, and confidently finish
your first novel. Click Here to Enroll Now!

Course Description: I watch new writers become published authors every
day. Helping you write a marketable novel is the main focus of this
course, but I also believe it is important to enjoy the journey. Each step
is taught in typical workshop fashion, removing the confusion associated
with most novel writing courses. Self-paced, and teacher assisted, these
20 lessons will help you write a novel that stands out, grabs the editor’s
attention, and gets published. A new writer will learn how to turn an idea
into chapters. Experienced authors will improve their creative writing
skills, and learn what editors are looking for in popular fiction novels.
Class participation is important, but you do not need to post weekly. I
mark most assignments within a day, and give examples of my comments when
possible. All students are encouraged to post their own work. I work as a
professional editor, and will help polish assignments, but I will not give
a professional critique or edit as part of this course. Students who
rewrite will receive a Certificate of Merit to indicate their enthusiasm
and commitment. I also issue certificates and letters of recommendation to
students who excel. This tells editors they are willing to do what it
takes to become a published author. If you put two hours a week into this
course, you should finish in four months. If you feel this course is too
demanding at this time you might want to review my course, “7 Steps to
Writing Your First Novel.” Click Here to Enroll Now!

Poetry 201: Digging Deeper into the Poetic Toolbox
Course No: 4765
Course ID: Poetry201
Cost: $15.00

Instructor: Scott Wiggerman

Duration: Continuous: Enroll anytime!

Course Description: 'Poetry 201: Digging Deeper into the Poetic Toolbox'
is a continuation of 'Poetry 101: The Way We Word,' though you needn't
have taken the first course to take this one. While 'Poetry 101' looked at
the general tools of poetry--imagery, metaphor, sound, rhythm, rhyme, and
form--,'Poetry 201' builds on these tools, but delves deeper into the
specifics of line breaks, stanzas, voice/persona, phrasing, and revision.
Designed for the beginning to intermediate poet, the five lessons of
'Poetry 201' focus on ways of enhancing one's own poetic output--and the
quality of that output--through both the lessons and an interactive
workshop environment. Lesson by lesson, through definitions, explanations,
and examples, you will apply what you've learned to poems of your own
creation through assignments. These original poems will be posted and
'work shopped,' meaning not only will you write poems, but you will
comment on others' poems. Similarly, you will receive feedback from others
on your own poems. Occasional online chats are also a part of this course.

Course Description: An introduction to the tools of poetry: imagery,
metaphor, sound, rhythm, rhyme, and form. By the end of the course,
students should have a clear understanding of what makes a poem a poem, as
well as a handful of new poems that they have written. Through a series of
six lessons, we will hit upon the essential tools for creating a poem:
imagery, metaphor, sound, rhythm, rhyme, and form. Each lesson expands
upon the previous lesson to show the interconnectivity of these essential
tools, but each one also looks at the tool in and of itself. In the
process, we will look at how these tools are used in various poems, by
means of definitions, explanations, and examples. The focus is not on
poetic terms, but on processes; while designed for the beginning poet, the
course would also be a good brush-up for intermediate and even advanced
poets. Lesson by lesson, you will then apply these tools to poems of your
own creation through assignments. So that we can all learn from each
other, these original poems will be posted and work shopped, meaning not
only will you write poems, but you will comment on others' poems.
Similarly, you will receive feedback from others on your own poems. Think
of the workshop aspect as one of constructive criticism, a means of
creative revision, of growing as a poet. Click Here to Enroll Now!
