Frequently Asked Questions
-
I have a
spelling checker on my computer. Why do I need you?
A spelling checker doesn’t know the difference between "peddle" and "pedal,"
or between "they’re," "there" and "their." But the people reading your work
do. A properly proofed and formatted document protects your reputation and
projects a professional image – qualities for which nobody should rely on
their (or is it they’re?) spelling checker.
-
How do I
decide how much editing my work needs?
There is no standard recommendation of which level of service any given
document requires. The issue depends on your specific requirements. To begin
with, the definitions for Basic Proofing and Proofing Plus on our
Proof Reading page should help
you decide. If you’re still in doubt, however, feel free to contact us via
e-mail or call us at 866-SHE-WORK
(Stay at Home Executives-Work), and we’ll be happy to discuss your specific needs with you.
-
What is
the difference between proofreading and copy editing, or in GardenOfGood.com's
case, between Basic Proofing and Proofing Plus?
In short, Basic Proofing examines the trees, while Proofing Plus also looks at
the forest. Basic Proofing corrects errors in spelling, grammar and
punctuation, as well as inconsistencies in format, capitalization, etc.
Proofing Plus does all that, and also looks at the bigger picture of style,
sense, clarity, redundancies and questionable grammar and structure choices.
-
Can you
handle any type of document, or do you specialize in certain fields?
Yes and yes! Each of our proofreaders and editors brings a number of
specialty fields with him or her. So whether you have a legal document or a
screenplay, a cookbook or a term paper, a novel or a scientific treatise, a
résumé or a technical manual, we will give it to the editor best suited to the
task.
-
Do you
accept international assignments?
Yes! We invoice in U.S. dollars, but we receive from and send to anywhere in
the world. We accept checks only in U.S. currency issued by U.S. financial
institutions.
-
How much
will it cost?
We feel that you have the right to know what our service is going to cost you
before you commit to using it, which is why we don’t use vague hourly
rates or quotes. As long as you give us accurate information about your
document, the price quote you get before placing your order is the price you
pay.
-
Why does
it cost as much if I want my document back as an electronic file than as a
paper copy?
Any experienced editor will tell you that proofreading on paper provides much
more accurate results than proofing on a computer screen. Which is why we do
all our work initially on paper. While we could mail you back the marked-up
hard copy as is, implementing our corrections on your electronic file requires
an extra step.
-
Do you
charge more for rush orders?
Yes, however, we do
charge a minimum of $25 per job.
-
Do you
offer student discounts?
No, we are an equal opportunity service and charge the same for all who use
our services.
-
How and
when do I pay you?
There are two payment options: The easiest way is to pay by credit card,
either through our secure payment operators site or by phone. We will not
bill your card until we send your corrected document back to you. Or you can
pay by check or money order. We accept checks only in U.S. currency issued by
U.S. financial institutions. First-time clients will be required to include
payment with their documents, or send it to GardenOfGood.com, before we
release the completed work. For repeat clients paying by check or money
order, payment is due within 15 days from invoice date.
- Is my credit card
information safe with you?
This site is protected by Certification. We
have a global provider of digital certificate products, services and solutions
that create security, privacy and authentication in electronic commerce.
- Can I trust
GardenOfGood.com to be discreet?
Yes! All our proofreaders and editors have signed a confidentiality agreement
guaranteeing that no client information of any kind will be released to
anybody.
-
How do I
send my work to you, and how will I get it back?
Pretty much whichever way suits you best. You can simply mail or courier us
the document, or e-mail it. We receive most of our work electronically.
-
What
platforms and files can you work in?
We can work in Windows. We work mostly in MS Word, but can work with, various
spreadsheet and database formats, as well as most types of picture files and
Adobe Acrobat. Working in Word you can easily see the revisions we made in
color.
